Not taking on any more challenges for a while, and all of my fic100-type communities are either languishing or I pulled out of them.

I am planning to participate in April Fool's again in a few months. I wish.

I should've been a cowboy. It sure as hell would've made my life easier, you know? Cowboys don't have to talk to anyone but cows or their horses or the stars at night. They don't have to shower and smile all the damn time for the fuckin' photographers and answer stupid redundant questions about tours and album drops and "why did you really leave the group, Kevin?"

Cowboys don't have blonde lovers nearly ten years their junior. They don't have to deal with angsty midnight phone calls while said lover rants on and on about what his nut-job mother has done this time. Cowboys certainly aren't tempted to charter a plane to retrieve their lover's mutt from the pound thousands of miles away.

Come to think of it, cowboys can shoot cattle rustlers. How different is that from a nut-job mother that steals dogs?

I definitely should've been a cowboy.

~fini~
9/1/07

prompt table

Nick was a bandmate, a friend, a kid brother for God's sake. But then when Nick grew up and the feelings deepened, refused to be ignored, he knew there was no hope of running away. It wasn't as if he hadn't tried for the past fifteen years, oh no. He'd married, then he'd left the group, and still his sleep was haunted by dreams of a tall blonde that most definitely was not his wife.

Kevin raised his hand to knock on the door of Nick's home knowing that his life was about to irrevocably change.

.: .: .: .: .:

Title (Rating): "Double or Nothing" (G)
Theme: Table 6, #02- Casino
Word Count: 107
Summary:

Kevin eyed the scantily clad waitresses that deftly weaved their way between the slot machines and the poker tables. There was no doubt in his mind how attractive most of them were, how willing they would be to make him a winner tonight in every sense of the word. He nodded to one brunette with a smile, but it was a smile that politely expressed his lack of interest. His sole interest was up on the fourteenth floor waiting for him, also scantily clad but very blonde. Leaving his half finished glass of scotch on an empty tray he strode toward the bank of elevators, toward Nick.

.: .: .: .: .:

Title (Rating): "Room With A View"
Theme: Table 6, #03- Heat of the day
Word Count: 107
Summary:

Despite the sweltering heat, this was one of Nick's favorite times of day. It was Thurday and while that meant nothing to anyone else, it was Nick's favorite day of the week. Thursday was lawn day, the day Kevin spent outdoors weeding and mowing and pruning and- my God, Nick's brain was already in overdrive. Settling onto a bar stool in the kitchen, he picked up a pencil and his sketchpad and looked out the huge window with the perfect view. As if on cue Kevin appeared, shirtless and wearing cutoff jeans, his muscular arms rippling as he worked and Nick smiled as he began to draw.

.: .: .: .: .:

Title (Rating): "Tequila Sunrise"
Theme: Table 6, #04- Peeling Paint
Word Count: 134
Summary:

Nick lay on the creaky twin bed in the seedy motel in Mexico, staring at the filthy ceiling. The paint was peeling, he had a hangover the size of Texas, and how the hell did a ceiling get that dirty anyway? Ultimately he decided he was probably better off not knowing and he closed his eyes against the memories of way too much tequila, way too many dances with a brown eyed beauty, and worst of all, the fight with Kevin that had sent him across the border in the first place.

Like most of their arguments it had started over something stupid that Nick had said at the wrong time and in the wrong place and dammit Kevin had every right to be pissed at him.

Nick hated it when Kevin was right.

.: .: .: .: .:

Title (Rating): "Soon"
Theme: Table 6, #05- Homeward bound
Word Count: 120
Summary:

The road was a lonely place, especially when the lonliness gripped your heart like a vise and you woke up for the fourth night in a row not having a damn clue what city you were in. Nick stumbled to the bathroom in the dark and splashed cold water on his face attempting to wipe away the cobwebs from his exhausted mind. It took a few minutes, but once his head cleared he could remember the conversation with Kevin yesterday, a conversation that spanned three -or was it four?- time zones and quite possibly the International Date Line.

"Just a few more days Nick, then you'll be home," he'd promised.

Kevin was his lifeline to sanity and he couldn't wait.

.: .: .: .: .:

Table Six prompts

001.

I should've been a cowboy.

002.

So many questions still left unanswered.

003.

I don't know how to leave you

004.

This place I never thought would feel like home

006.

What will it take till you believe in me, the way that I believe in you?

007.

Come away with me and we'll see if I was right on that night that a future was made.

008.

It doesn't matter who she is, I think about you.

009.

All the things I thought I knew, I'm learning again.

010.

I don't want to use you just to have somebody by my side.

011.

I remember the days you were a hero in my eyes

012.

All the lies that I made you believe

013.

I can't pretend I won't think about you when I'm older.

014.

I knew we'd meet again another time another place

015.

You broke the boy in me, but you won't break the man

016.

I’ll never be what you want me to be.

017.

Making friends with shadows on my wall

018.

I gave you my skin and my original sin

019.

I held the world back for you

020.

ried to tell you but you look at me like maybe I'm an angel underneath, innocent and sweet.

021.

Surrounded by a million people I still feel all alone

022.

I treated you like a child; I'm gonna miss you for the rest of my life.

023.

It wasn't that hard to figure you out

024.

You're just a child with a temper

025.

It must be magic how inside your eyes, I see my destiny

026.

Can't remember when I last saw you laughing.

027.

I was born the day you kissed me; I died inside the night you left me.

028.

Finally content with a past I regret

029.

They'll never allow me to change.Never dreamed home would end up where I don't belong

030.

I've been living for tomorrows all my life

031.

In my heart you will remain forever young.

032.

I can't be accused of not being there for you.

033.

I know you'll be better off without me when I'm gone.

034.

You're a beautiful, beautiful, fucked up, man.

035.

The impossible occurs each day

036.

I promised myself I wouldn't think of you today

037.

You've moved on; I still feel exactly the same.

038.

You're not the man you used to be/Neither is this guy.

039.

Through it all we kept the promises we made.

040.

The only question now is: Do I make you proud

041.

All our sins come back to haunt us in the end.

042.

I never thought that this is where I'd settle down; I thought I'd die an old man back in my hometown

043.

It was no accident, me finding you.

044.

A vision of a child, disturbed and broke down

045.

I mean nothing to you and I don't know why

046.

Learning things I ought to know by now.Call me teacher, call me friend, just like the first time.c

049.

I didn't need to see his face.

050.

It all comes back to you.

Feel free to skip this. *laughs*

So the NaNo panic is settling in, as I'm sure it is with everyone else that is planning on signing up. I began thinking about one of my more popular stories that I wrote during the time I was immersed in Trek fandom. "Confirmation" was six parts and an epilogue, and it was a sequel to the shorter work "Rumors". It was one of my early solo ventures, one of the first not written under the wing of cruisedirector and every once in a while I still receive feedback. It was the summer of 1995. Wow.

I got to thinking last night, that since this was probably the most lengthy thing I'd ever written, that it had to have a wonderfully high word count! So, I just copied it all from my website and pasted it and the prequel into Notepad. I searched and edited out all the '~~~' that I used to divide sections of the chapters, and I purposely didn't include chapter numbers. I then pasted it all into the handy dandy online counter that I used for all of my writing, at Zokutou.

I discovered that the two of them combined contained a whopping 25,483 words. That is both depressing and encouraging. It's depressing because I was so totally convinced that it was much, much higher, also because it was written eleven years ago when I was in a much different frame of mind about my writing. Face it, I was eleven years younger, I only had two children then, I'd just discovered fanfiction and the internet, and I was on fire! Anything was possible!

I'm in a much different place today, physically, mentally, and just life in general. It means I'm going to have to find something to spark that sort of passion again. A plot that grips me and won't let me sleep at night, characters that own my soul... Oh mercy, I'm in trouble. *g*

I said that it was encouraging, too, and it is. It's encouraging because eleven years later I'm still writing. If I could do that as a novice back then, I can do it as a more experienced writer now. I have to let go of my inner editor and remember that this isn't something I want to post to a mailing list tomorrow, something I want to show someone right now, something that needs to be edited as I go. The goal is to write, the goal is to get it done and let it flow.

This is a totally new concept to me.

We're going to be in NYC from November 21 - 25. I'll have the laptop along, but I know myself. This means I'm going to need to buckle down and get my butt in gear as soon as the clock strikes 12:01 am on November 21st.

All donations of coffee, chocolate and unused muses will be gratefully accepted.

Kevin smirked, sliding his well-lubed hand up Nick's erection, squeezing it just a bit tighter than necessary, just the way his lover likes it, just the way he knows will send him into a screaming orgasm.

"No... yes ... Kevin, please ..." Nick whimpered, just like the last time and the time before that.

"I love it when you beg, Nicky," Kevin smiled, licking a long wet trail up Nick's swollen cock, his hand slowing even more, "beg me and maybe I'll let you come."

.: .: .: .: .:

Title (Rating): "Seeing Stars" (NC-17)
Theme: Table 4, #12- Double vision
Word Count: 104
Summary: sex. ;)

"Do it baby," Nick whispered, buried deep inside his lover's body, his cock unerringly stroking Kevin's sweet spot. "Come for me, Kevin, you're so fucking beautiful when you come."

Kevin's head slammed back against the feather pillow, his mouth gasping for air, his long fingers grasping at Nick's ass in a vain effort to pull him completely inside him and join them together forever.

"Nick-" Kevin called out Nick's name, seeing stars as he exploded between them, coating his belly and Nick's chest and vaguely h4earing his lover's answering cry.

"Oh fuck me," Nick sighed, collapsing against Kevin's side and knowing that Kevin would, indeed.

.: .: .: .: .:

Title (Rating): "After the Loving" (R)
Theme: Table 4, #13- Paradise
Word Count: 76
Summary: sappy schmoop. *sigh*

"It's perfect here, Kev, I don't wanta ever leave."

Kevin smiled, wrapping his arm around Nick as he spooned up behind him in the dark. The moonlight shone through the open French doors on the balcony as the nighttime breeze ruffled the sheer drapes.

"Who says you have to, Nick?" Kevin whispered, threading his fingers though his lover's.

"I love you, Kev," Nick whispered as he turned in Kevin's arms, beginning the loving all over again.

.: .: .: .: .:

Title (Rating): "Hurt" (R)
Theme: Table 4, #14- In the dark
Word Count: 72
Summary: poor Kevin ... *sigh*

"More, oh god yes ... more ..."

Kevin always complied, giving Nick more, giving Nick whatever he asked for as he writhed beneath him in pleaure.

As always, they made love in the dark; rough and erotic, fantasies winning out over slow, sensual lovemaking.

In the dark, Kevin lost more of himself and his pride each time. In the dark, Nick never saw Kevin's pain when he called out AJ's name instead.

.: .: .: .: .:

Title (Rating): "Closeness" (R)
Theme: Table 4, #15- Personal space
Word Count: 121
Summary: Nick proves to be a distraction for Kevin

Nick leaned against Kevin, watching over his shoulder as he hastily scrawled quarter notes on his favorite manuscript paper, unable to resist humming the melody that was taking shape.

"No, that's AJ's part," Kevin smirked, "you sing the next line, so hang on and be patient."

"No fair," Nick said a few minutes later, "he has more notes than me!"

"You ever hear of personal space, Nick ... it's a wonderful thing sometimes, very useful when I'm writing music," Kevin chuckled, not really bothered in the least.

"Nope, never heard of it," Nick grinned as he pushed the papers to the floor and climbed over Kevin's lap; as Nick tossed Kevin's shirt to the floor as well, the music was forgotten.

.: .: .: .: .:

My Challenge Table

His hands were shaking as his mind raced in a million different directions. He'd done it. He'd finally made the decision that had been haunting his dreams for the past year and now that he'd told his closest friend, it was time to tell the one person in his life who meant more to him than anyone else possibly could.

Nick. He had to call him and tell him he was leaving. Not him, but the group. The place they'd grown up together, the place they'd learned to live together, the place they'd learned to love.

He'd spent two hours on the phone with his cousin Brian. He'd laid it all out for him, explained his reasons, and tried to justify it so that it almost sounded like he himself was convinced. Brian had listened, then asked questions, then finally prayed for him as they both wept.

"How does Nick feel about it, Kevin?" he'd asked.

"He doesn't know, Bri." Kevin winced, as if he could see the expression on Brian's face.

"You have to tell him, Kev. He can't hear this from anyone else." Implicit was the underlying yet unspoken 'You should have told him first.'

"I will, but ..." Kevin scrubbed his hand over his unshaven face. "I had to talk to you first, I couldn't just dump this on Nick."

"Like you dumped it on me?" he chuckled. "I know, I get that, but Kevin-"

He nodded his head as if Brian were right there and could see. "I know. I'll do it now."

"Good. Good luck, cous. Call me?"

"I will, later. Thanks."

It was another hour before Kevin forced himself to pick up the phone and make the call that would change his life forever.

"Nicky? Baby, it's me. Can I come over? We need to talk."

It may sound absurd: but don't be naive
Even Heroes have the right to bleed
I may be disturbed:but won't you conceed
Even Heroes have the right to dream
It's not easy to be me

~ fin ~
7/11/06

my ldt

As usual, he was methodical, bordering on obsessive about his things being layered just right, making sure that nothing would wrinkle during the flight. Nick grinned as he thought about the time that Kevin had delayed, yes, actually delayed an interview while he ironed a shirt.

"Stop laughing at me, you know I hate what suitcases do to my clothes." Kevin cast a mildly irritated glance at the smirking blonde and continued his smoothing of non-existant wrinkles.

"Take a hanging bag, Kev, it's a no brainer."

"I hate hanging bags, and there's never enough room for them and last time it ended up getting tossed with the baggage anyway and-"

"Kevin, stop."

To Nick's utter amazement, he did. Kevin looked up, still holding the blue oxford shirt in his hands, his fingers gripping it tightly and threatening to cause the very wrinkles he'd been railing about just seconds before.

"Nick-"

"Remember three years ago?"

Kevin's brows furrowed, not having a clue as to what Nick was talking about.

"Me. Sweden. My solo cd, Kevin." He climbed off the bed and gently took the shirt from Kevin's nervous fingers. "I was scared to death, and you talked me down. You told me I could do it, that I could do anything I wanted as long as I wanted it badly enough."

Kevin nodded, a small smile relaxing the tense lines at the corner of his lips. "And you did, Nick. I knew you could."

"So can you. Kev, you wanted this badly enough to make it official, and we all backed you. We're standing right behind you in whatever you do. You deserve to be happy, Kevin."

"I know, Nick. I do. But I can't help wondering if this is gonna mean the end for the rest of you."

"We won't let it. I promise." Nick rested his hand on Kevin's face. "But you know what? If it does- and that's a big 'if'- if it does, it's not the end of the world. You've told all of us all along that we can do anything we wanta do and we believe it. It's been a hell of a ride, Kev, but there are always other things out there."

"It's not fair, Nicky." Kevin sighed, the weight of his decision threatening to crush him.

Nick shrugged. "Life's not fair, Kev. But you have to do this. You have to. Now finish packing before I take over and do it for you."

"Bullshit, you're not ruining my favorite shirts. Like that time in-" He stopped his rant, realizing that Nick was standing there smirking, and that he'd managed to relax in spite of himself.
Leaving tomorrow morning for LA. We'll be gone two weeks, drving from there back to here (Miami). I've printed out my challenge tables and have a spiral notebook packed, but even if I get some writing done I won't be able to post till we get home. We'll have the old laptop and are aiming for internet connections wherever we stay, but that doesn't always work out.

If I can post pictures, I'll put up a link.

Toodles!!!
